NUUK MASTERPLAN & RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT  // Nuuk, GL // 2013-14

We were commissioned to produce a concept proposal for a large mixed use scheme consisting of 35 apartments, retail units, and community spaces including workshops, studios, greenhouses and a productive landscape of private and communal allotments on the site of the former wetlands. The project is designed to have minimal environmental
impact, using the Passivhaus standard to achieve a zeroenergy and carbon-neutral development. The sculpted
volumetric character of the residential buildings is defined by the environment needs to maximum solar gain while
minimising the effects of cold northerly winds; there is large triple-glazed elevations to the south and solid, highly
insulated elevations to the north. The articulation and horizontal layering of different floor plates within each volume creates a scale that complements the locality and local vernacular, while the white and highly reflective ceramic façades subtly reflect and accentuate the seasonal variations of daylight and colour. Our design proposal formed part of a wider masterplan by TNT Nuuk (GL) and Dahl&Uhre Architects (NO) (D&U in collaboration with MDH Architects(NO).
