We were commissioned to produce a concept proposal for a large mixed use scheme consisting of 35 apartments, retail units, and community spaces including workshops, studios, greenhouses and a productive landscape of private and communal allotments on the site of the former wetlands. The project is designed to have minimal environmental
impact, using the Passivhaus standard to achieve a zeroenergy and carbon-neutral development. The sculpted
volumetric character of the residential buildings is defined by the environment needs to maximum solar gain while
minimising the effects of cold northerly winds; there is large triple-glazed elevations to the south and solid, highly
insulated elevations to the north. The articulation and horizontal layering of different floor plates within each volume creates a scale that complements the locality and local vernacular, while the white and highly reflective ceramic fa├žades subtly reflect and accentuate the seasonal variations of daylight and colour. Our design proposal formed part of a wider masterplan by TNT Nuuk (GL) and Dahl&Uhre Architects (NO) (D&U in collaboration with MDH Architects(NO).
